The first thought that came into mind when I was writing the heading for this article was the yoga masters of India. This also includes some of the greatest, unheralded masters of qigong and other martial arts.
What do we mean when we say "conquering mind and body"? First, the mind has got a playground of its own that it jealously guards. Second, conquering the mind is a battle that most normal mortals won't win.
While it is not that difficult to stay away from a banquet table of mouth-watering food, it is quite anothe to tell yourself that it is safe to pierce your tongue with a skewer.
Both in its very basic terms means "conquering your mind and body". Having complete master of the mind is one of the toughest tasks that man faces. For example, you can trying meditating for just five minutes without a single thought of distraction passing through it.
Chances are you have failed. That is why in some of martial art circles, "empty your mind" is an advice heeded successfully by a rare few.
They say that if a man can empty his mind of daily preoccupations, he can catch a glimpse of the divine. How far that is true escapes the reason and logic for most ordinary mortals.
Unlike the human world of physics, chemistry and nano seconds, plus mathematical logic, the realm of conquest over mind and body require a minimal amount of effort. The more you exert, or the more you try, the harder the task becomes.
Thus, the world of the inexplicable and the dominion of mystery requires almost no effort from us. No effort doesn't mean, we can easily slip into the other dimension. It means if you do not know how to do it, chances are it are actually ill-prepared for that special journey.
The barriers towards complete mastery of mind and body can come in your moment of greatest relaxation. It's moment when your mind is free last,or not shackled by encumbrances of ordinary earth.
When all activities of our mind and in our mind cease to flow or exist, the portal to forever opens ever so surely. This is what masters call the "moment of Zen". You can reach for it, but you cannot touch. You call for it but it will not come.
The conquerors of mind and body can rejuvenate their physical forms. They can even revitalise their internal organs. It is a weird situation if you do not under the ways of the masters.
Many have tried to follow but few ever are able to reach the desination. There is a place called Eternity. It is a land where no mortals dwell. It must be reached through the soul.
It is where the conquerors of minds and bodies have entered and exited. It is where all of us want to go but very few of us ever arrived.
But if you are sincere, your heart is in the right place, the portal may yet open ajar slightly at times for you to catch a shadow of a glimpse of what your heart desires.
The advice here is: Do not give up. At the same time, do not try that hard. Effort has little to do with conquest of mind and body. It has to do with nothing because nothing holds the key.

Good health begins with a single thought
Not many people are mentally committed towards pursuing a healthy mind and body goal. The main obstacle is the belief that it involves too much work.
Intelligent people would wake up at 5am to have an early breakfast, sacrifice some much needed sleep time to meet friends at the golf course, and yet they won't spent 30 minutes each day doing some simple exercises that will bring benefits to themselves for the rest of their lives.
The same people will spend thousands of dollars going for vacations abroad and yet won't spend a couple hours each week meditating in their own home.
Before you pronounce these same people having their priorities wrong, it would only be fair to say that there are as many rights as there are people on earth.
The only thing is what is your ultimate life decision. Do you want to remain healthy until your last day on earth, or do you want to live as much and as well as you can, without much regard of how your health fare in your waning years?
Since this is a blog all about good health, we would place top priority on well being. Good health means less expenses on medicare, fewer worries about aches and pains in middle age and the years beyond. It also means you can walk unaided either by willing human hands.
Until you actually have to hang on to something or somebody for support either in standing upright or walking, you won't really appreciate what it's like to be physically independent.
Millions of people in the world right now, young and old, are crying for help to ease their pain and discomfort.
Some are born with physical disabilities so they are the exceptions. Others who started off healthy become sick and suffering in pain, due to their own neglect over the years and decades.
It is only wise to decide early in life as to what kind of life's experience you would welcome as you grow older. It all begins with a mental commitment.
If you don't really care much for exercise and other simple remedies to avert a life-long passage of aches and pain, then you will have to work towards that end. The bottom line is everybody can achieve good health.
In other words, you can do it. Do it early. Better still, do it now. It is common to hear young people saying, rather cockily that they have no problems with weight, sleep and energy. They normally say that when they are in their teens.
Give them a few more years, and they may change their perception of good health that they have been taking for granted in their younger years.
I often tell people who complain incessantly about aches in shoulders, hands and knees, that they won't be giving me a litany of their woes if only they had listen to their physical education teachers in school.
Everybody gets a chance to be healthy and stay healthy. But do you want to do it. There's some physical effort involved. Think of the minimal investment that goes such a long way.
If you stay doing the right things at a young age, it becomes routine and easy after a while. Of course, you can start going to the gym in your 40s but it won't be that comforting because by the time you are in your fourth decade on earth, exercises is only one solution towards damage control.
Think of the abuse on your body over the last 40 years. The human body is just like any other living organism. It obeys the laws that govern life on earth and in our universe. You get what you put it, or what you won't and don't put in.
If you are in your teens right now, I will strongly advise you to do it, meaning learn to develop a set of simple exercises and stick to them daily.
In time, you will be the envy of your contemporaries who will be moaning and groaning with pain, while you are blissfully ignorant of the physical discomforts that plague your generation.
Do it now and you won't regret it.

It's all in the breathing
Everyone of us can breathe since the day we came into this world. Breathing is automatic. It is carried out without thought and done with practically no effort.
To the babies, breathing was part of the package but as you grow older and older, you will begin to find that breathing can sometimes be a chore. We often take our lungs for granted, same for our health.
We all think that breathing is natural and as long as we breathe or can breath, our longevity will not be an issue.
Breathing for health is a technique. The body is a living organism, so why take it for granted. There are some "free divers" who can hold their breaths for as long as 10 to 11 minutes. Normally, a man can hold his breath for about a minute and a half.
After that, he will begin to panic. When you are able to control your breathing, you will begin to control the state of your health. Deep breathing can add more life into your body better than an athlete who train six hours a day.
When a person is physically fit, he is deemed to be healthy. That's the normal run of things.
However, a jogger who runs three miles a day doesn't mean he will have a long life. It has been reported that people who claimed to be physically fit have died during jogging sessions.
Deep, controlled breathing means directing the qi around the body. It is like having an expensive additive in your body, lubricating all the rusty, worn-out parts.
A man who knows how to breath, breathes life into his body and lets it circulate with the form that is called the human body.
Breathe with your stomach and not your chest and lungs. Almost nine out of 10 people believe that the proper technique in breathing is expanding the lung capacity.
The anatomy of the human body allows for the diaphragm to drop if you are doing it the right way.
Deep breathing lowers blood pressure, it aids in better blood circulation and gives your mind a healthy, gentle jolt every now and them.
Next time, when you are anxious or panicking over something, try this: take in deep breath slowly. When you have reached full capacity, hold it for a couple of seconds and then exhale slowly.
Feel as if the inner organ in your body are relaxing. Act like a balloon when it is deflating. You just go woooosh. The art of deep breathing is actually the art of breath control. Make your breath deep and long.
After a while, when you have mastered the techniques of deep breathing you can begin add "strength" to your limbs. Breath control is part of moving the qi.
A man who is a master of breath control is like a walking oasis. He has the attributes to make things grow within his body. Health is his for the asking.
His mind becomes more alert. If need be, he will increase his strength by four folds.
Do not underestimate the merits of deep breathing or breath control. Once you have mastered it successfully, you will reap the estwhile unknown benefits that have been denied many who take this simple art for granted.
Control your breath, and you will control your life. Control your life and you can reach for the stars.
The human body is capable of wondrous feats. Breath control is merely a portal that leads you to attain your fullest potential. You may just awaken those parts of your brain that have laid dormant for decades.
If you can tap 40 per cent of the human brain, you will be hailed as the man who has given the greatest treasure to mankind, and that is to create geniuses for the betterment of mankind.

Learn to let go
It is an old advice: get a good night's sleep. It's true. Too many people push themselves too hard.
A lot of up an coming, young professionals feel that if they were to work 14 hours a day plus 4 hours at the gym and pub, they will be fine. Yes, they will be fine, if they are lucky, for about 10 years.
Then in their mid-30s, normally their health will cave in because all the stresses and accumulated abuse of bodily functions will kick in.
How many times have you told yourself that you really need some good sleep and then don't? For goodness sake, don't torture yourself. The world and all that office work can wait.
Your continued good health can't - good sleep is essential for a refreshed body and a calm disposition. Look at it this way, if you are going to stay awake for 24 hours and finish your work, you are still not going to be the boss.
That's why the other guy is the boss because he can keep your awake for 24 hours while he has his beauty sleep.
When you doze off, you are actually letting go. Letting go is such a simple phrase but too many people misconstrue it as "giving up". Yes, in a way, it is giving up but it's actually giving up on the built-up stresses of a long, drawn day.
Your body and mind can only take so much. All organic lifeforms will break down when they reach critical mass. Even machines break down, and these objects created by man are not even organic, nor are they lifeforms.
Letting go means that you will continue to work at a solution but you will not lose sight of other important aspects of daily living. That means having proper meals, spending time with your family and having fun with your hobbies.
Pity the man who devotes all his waking hours for the betterment of the company he works for. Your boss may notice your unusual diligence but he may not be impressed by your stupidity.
Most organisations will prefer a diligent worker who also uses his commonsense. That means getting your priorities right. If you have to go home, then go home. If you need to rest, then rest. What can be more simpler than that?
If the only way for you to let go is to check into an intensive care unit at the hospital, then you really need some serious counselling. Too many people, in their pursuit of a healthy bank account, forget about the other more important things in life.
These are striking a balance between office and home. Just imagine that if you drop dead right now, will your company grind to a halt. Most probably not. Yes, if you can accept this cold, hard fact, then you may not want to be a office warrior that you have imagined yourself to be.
Letting go can also be applied to other facets of life. It can be used intelligently on relationships and on problems that cannot be solved immediately. Learn to let go, as it is often said but seldom heard in its right context by the majority of people.
Take for example, if a dear one has departed under tragic circumstances, you would probably be in mourning for some time. But when the period is over, you must let go, otherwise it is going to do you more harm than that person you are grieving for.
Imagine this: for hundreds of generations mothers and fathers have worried for their children and over them, and yet when the time came, the subjects of their worries continued with their lives.
And all the worriers and worried-over eventually find their way to their graves. So where does all that "not letting go" take you - nowhere actually.
Problems are solved easier if your mind is at rest and your heart is at peace. This is not hearsay but a scientific discovery in recent years. Researchers have found out that problematic situations are often solved faster when the mind is at peace.
It is said that solutions to problems are often found at the three B's - Bedroom, Bathrub and Buses. These are the three places where most of us are most relaxed.
So let to let go and let life takes it natural course. You won't regret it.

Find the source of perpectual good health
I know it is unfair to ask anybody to find the source of all good being but it does exist. It is where your soul travels to after your physical form has given up its usefulness.
But those who strive to arrive at this Source will attain all there is, and all the goodness from the Source will be obtained freely without conditions.
It is said that the Source is one place where thought cannot enter. It is a place of no-thought. It is a realm where human effort cannot be exerted and it will always be a source of peace and happiness for those who embark on a quest for it.
In martial arts, in yoga, in transcendatl meditation, the objective is always to look into your inner self. Though words can be found to describe it, the Source is beyond human language.
The yoga masters call it the Mother of all Kundalinis. The Japanese identify the place as Satori and the Buddhist simply call it Zen.
The rest of us mortals name it heaven. Whatever you want to call it, it exists though many will walk through this life and perhaps many other cycles of life without catching even the slightest glimmer of it.
There's no trick in entering its domain. It has nothing to do with determination or perseverance and everything to do with spirituality. Some people live their entire lives and not find it, and a few rare ones encounter it even though they may not be looking for it.
These are some of the mysteries that defy human explanation. We are all destined to enjoy perfect health. Unfortunately, that's where it ends. It is only a wish and a quest by the best of the most of us.
At the Source, if you arrive there, all will be made whole. There is no room for abnormalies and incorrectness in the presence of the Source. Once you are in the Source, all that is askewed will be rectified and corrected.
Thus, perfect health is the reward of being at the Source. It's law cannot be denied. Its power cannot be resisted. It is the only One and it is All.
Once you are one with the Source, your entire physical being bows to its commands and it has only one law - Love. As they say, in the end, Love is all there is.
At the Source, there is no life or death. These are human conditions and there's no place for these conditions.
You who read this may lead healthy lifestyles. You may exercise regulary and a true follower of your own religion but to attain the bliss that is associated with the Source, you need to walk on its holy grounds.
There's no prize for knowing about the Source. You just are and you are being there.
Throw out all doubts, all human thoughts of unhappiness, hostility and sadness. These are baggages that cannot be checked in at the gateway of the Source. The human heart and soul know about the Source but unless both heart and soul are one with each other, the human that is you will forever be barred from knowing the holiest of holy at the Source.
The idea is to Be Still. Be very still indeed, and know that He is God.

Worry is the shortest route to an otherwise long life
Why worry? Actually that's easier said than done. It's true. You have friends, wives, husbands, relatives, sons and daughters always imparting this piece of advice.
"Don't worry, it won't change anything!" Wrong! It changes things. It transforms your health. Worry makes you sick. Sick with worry, as they say.
Still, in the generations that have gone by, and for generations to come, human beings will continue to worry. Only the wisest among us, the most spiritual of us all will cease to worry, or rather they have gone up to the altar of deepest worry, stare at the idol and recognise it for what it is and what it has been all this while - absolutely nothing.
Yes, worry is sort of built-into our psyche. We worry about our retirement, we worry about what comes after retirement, we worry about our own health, we worry about our loved ones, we worry about job opportunities, we worry about whether anyone will love us, we worry about getting our next meal, we worry about keeping up with our obnoxious neighbours, we worry about the state of the world, we worry about the next terrorist attack, etc.
Heck, we worry just for the sake of worrying. Is that normal? Yes and no. Yes, because everybody worries at one time or another in the course of his natural life. No, because if worrying is carried on to the extreme, it can be a health hazard.
My recommended antidote for neutralising worry is to find another habit that makes you forget your worry. For example, if you are worried about your child's education, then do something about it.
If your son is not doing well in school, find out why he's not doing well. If he says he's just not interested in studies, then try your best to convince him about the long term benefits of a good education.
If he is a totally "useful case" as far as education is concerned, then ask him what he would like to do. Absolutely nobody dislikes everything. There must be something a person likes.
I once told my children, "if you like to be a hawker, then be the best hawker in town. Make me proud. The most important thing is be happy at what you do."
Worry comes in a million forms, and they are all debilitating after a while. Worry takes the shortest route to illness. Not everybody knows that. Those who do usually don't fall sick. They know better.
Have you ever come across someone who says "why worry, just go ahead and enjoy life." I know it's irritating to hear that from such a joyful person when you feel like crawling into bed and sleep your blues away.
I have met people like that before. These people inspire me. I am glad I come across people like that. Life should always be like that - fast route to happiness and joy.
Nowadays, when friends or strangers come up and ask me: "How's life with you?" My immediate response is "Better than ever!" They are usually taken aback by such a reply. They can't believe that I can be so cheerful.
I tell you what, the next time you think life has handed you a raw deal, just think of those places that presently face disaster or horrendous conditions and you are not there. For example, Darfur, Kandahar, Beirut, in the middle of the Gobi Desert, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean where currently Hurricane Gordon is forming and in the refugee camps all over the world.
You could be in anywhere of these very sad places but you are not. So the conclusion is you are indeed a lucky person. Thank God for that. So what's your worry?
You should actually be down on your knees right now and kiss the ground. Go home and hug your children, kiss your wife and take them all out for a great meal. Life is good. You are not dead yet. Chances are tomorrow you will wake up alive and are given a second chance at being a better person.
So what's your worry again?
"Don't worry, it won't change anything!" Wrong! It changes things. It transforms your health. Worry makes you sick. Sick with worry, as they say.
Still, in the generations that have gone by, and for generations to come, human beings will continue to worry.

Twin paths to good health
KINDNESS and forgiveness. These are two of the sure avenues to good health. The explanation is so startingly simple that it almost defies belief.
Have you not felt the unscratchable ache when you feel hostility and anger towards another person? Never mind the fact whether that person whom you have in mind deserves your kindness.
The act of forgiving is health-giving (to yourself). Kindness is its own reward. Doctors and scientists have only recently found out that the positive values in life go a long way in adding harmony to one's well-being.
Learning to be kind is an act, not an art. Those who feel that they are just being hypocrtical if they do what they don't feel like doing. Wrong. Practise the act of kindness.
In time, such gestures will become part of your persona. Kindness is built into our soul and being. Nurture it, and it will grow and triumph over the other negative traits.
A good heart doth builds a healthy constitution. Forgiveness calms a troubled heart, soothes the soul and gives life to an ebbing spirit.
Most of us think that if we spend thousands of dollars at a well established gym and sacrifice many hours of a week at such places, we will naturally become strong and healthy.
Yes, that is part of it but the secrets of a healthy body begins with a healthy mind, and the paths have been identified as kindness and forgiveness.
Lest, someone thinks kindness and forgiveness are precursors to a call to a life of meditation and prayer, they are never more wrong. These two conditions are necessary for a life free of much stress and worries.
The masters of martial arts and arts like tai chi and qigong understand the concepts that make ordinary men great and great men saints. Well, most of us will shy away from being labelled as "saints" but I don't think we mind being called "great" (even though we may not deserve that honour).
Lest it be said that "kindness" and "forgiveness" are the bywords that find solace and commonality with monasteries and convents, those are the same qualities we find in our mothers.
As little boys and girls growing up in the safety and comfort of our mothers' bosoms, we are surely no strangers to forgiveness and kindness. All of us, as I would like to believe, grew up remembering more of our own mums than our own dads.
One of the reasons is because dads are always busy at work. When we need some urgent cash, we will look at dad's direction, otherwise we steered clear of dad's path.
I notice with the passing of years and the passages of life that those people who are imbued with the superior qualities of forgiveness and kindness tended to lead healthier and happier lives. Why is that so?
My guess it it has something to do with the good side of life. When a person is attuned to the positive waves of all that is good, something happens to his physical constitution. His body recognises these signals and is subsconsciously harmonised with good health and a sound mind.
Yes, everybody eventually deteriorates physically but let's not hasten the deterioration process. Let it happen naturally. We can live longer than most of us think.
Right now, our natural life span is about 70 to 75. By right, it should be in the region of 90 to 120. Impossible? Tell it to those who have lived up till that age.
The stresses of modern living is one of the greatest scourges of the present day world. We pay too much attention to those aspects of life that are not good for us.
We have lost our way somewhere while travelling on the highway of life. Let's hold on to the two that are forever in us and in front of us. They are kindness and forgiveness.
Practise these two qualities. Internalise them. Let them be part of us and we be part of them. These two qualities are the paths to longevity and they are among the smoothest byways in the highway of our lives.

A Touch of Zen
I HAVE learnt from a few (very few) close qigong colleagues that on very rare occasions when they are so engrossed in doing their exercise that there were brief moments when they are "lost in time".
These occasions are what I would describe as people "being touched by Zen". If I may be so humbled as to attempt an explanation.
Sometimes when you are dreaming, and a lovely dream it is, your mind's eye are totally engrossed in participating in the series of events that unfold. Your eyes are open but you do not see, at least not the objects or scenery in front of you.
Instead, you "see" a chain of happenings taking place in your mind. You do not sense the passing of time. You only realise what has transpired when you are out of the loop, so to speak.
People who have had experiencs with a touch of Zen tell of being one with their surroundings. It is an experience that escapes the human language. You have to be there, in there and part of it all, to know what it is all about. And if you are asked to describe what has happened to you, chances are you will be at a loss for words. Because no words or adjectives are adequate to to create the totality in a pictorial understanding for the human mind.
The human mind, in substance, is merely biological. The other "mind" wanders, exists, doesn't sleep and is a portal to the "other side". Lest, I be accused of engaging in a topic that slips from the grasp of human understanding, Zen is something that is being experienced, rather than described.
That is why, for centuries, Zen masters have taught lessons to their students by way of koans. Koan is a riddle or paradoxical anecdote employed by Zen masters to give logical reasoning a good jolt. This device is supposed to throw the normal thought process out of the Zen window, thereby creating a vacuum by which understanding enters from Nothingness.
If this is bewildering to you at this juncture, it's time to stop thinking about it and go out and have a cup of tea.
Where in this world is found Zen? No where, actually because Zen is intangible. It is formless and it simply and absolutely cannot be pegged or pinned down. You do not find Zen. It touches you when all that is right has taken place.
There is no winner or loser in the Zen game. It is not even a game. Eons ago, that famous Chinese sage by the name of Lao Tze attempted to describe it. The closest he came to describing it, was "not describing it".
Lao Tze called it the Tao. Tao or Zen, it means the same thing. It is not even a thing. It is nothing and yet something. It is not subjected to the laws of human language, nor to its physical laws.
To be touched by Zen is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Many people go through lifetimes experiencing nothing of it. Only a few have been touched. Those who can experienced being part of Zen are the great teachers you read about in books.
These are the people who have been there and back. They have elected to stay back and spread the word but many do not understand them. Nevertheless, they put the message in very simple terms so that at least a modicum of understanding can be achieved.
Meanwhile, the world continues to turn on its axis. Those who are chosen to feel the touch of Zen will become masters of time and captains of their fate. They know they are not anyone's champion or master. They just are, and they remain so at will.
That is the miracle and the Zen of it all.

The Wrong Approach to Good Health
It is common knowledge among many of us that we only value our health when we are about to lose it or when it is near state of disrepair. What's the use of overhauling a body that has no ready-made spare parts.
It is not as if our bodies are like cars where you can easily shop for a damaged part. The commonsense approach is to maintain it well while it is still in good running condition.
Granted that very few of us are built like a Ferrari, a Porsche or a Rolls-Royce. Still, even if our own body is just an ordinary "saloon" model, we have to pay some attention to it if we want to keep it on the route for an unspecified period of time.
If you don't step on to the accelerator pedal too hard and too often, the carburretor won't wear off that faster. The pistons won't have to handle the undue stresses that come with an accelerated engine in top gear all the time.
Hence, the internal parts of the engine will suffer less wear-and-tear and will serve its owner longer and more efficiently.
Exercising whether it be aerobics, martial arts, tai-chi or qigong are like adding premium additives into the relevant areas. It helps to lubricates the interior and give the wholeall engine a big boost.
So that when you are going uphill, you won't tired that easily and you can climb a steep incline much better than a worn-out body. When you are young, yout take for granted all that life has to offer you.
When you were young, just as when a car is new, you do not have jerky movements due to prolonged use. Your recovery time is swifter and you are better able to handle the bumps and pot-roads along the road.
A constant and moderate level of daily exercise routine is like giving your body the regular check-ups that it needs. So don't wait till smoke comes out of your radiator and causes the car to stall before you need the help of the mechanic.
If you look after your body as much and as well as you keep an eye on your car, you will go through a long trouble-free period.
Isn't that better than sourcing for spare parts when there is none on offer. Hey, mankind has not perfected the stem-cell technique yet. So you will have to make do with all the flaws and defects that form the entire structure which we call the body.

Can you self-heal with qigong?
This question has been asked umpteen times. The answer is still the same as it was given hundreds of years ago - YES!
Next question: how is it done? Simple, practise qigong with diligence and discipline and your body will take over from there. Our body is like any other living organism.
If you water your plant regularly and intelligently, it will be healthy and the leaves will be green and glowing. Same with the human body. If you look after it (with qigong exercises, of course), it will remain healthy and pristine.
Done over a period of time, the body begins to obey the laws of the universe. That it, if all is done in accordance with the laws that govern good health, the way is paved with effects that will bring a shine to your face.
Our body is a slave to the unshakeable and unchangeable laws of good health. Qigong is but an avenue that opens the window to all that is true and good. If you have discipline and becomes a true advocate of an art that is centuries old, then you will reap the harvest of bountiful health.
Once you can heal yourself, then you can take the next step. And that is - heal others. For those who are into a bit of hype, it is called the Power of Qi.
Those people who have encountered qigong masters who can harness the cosmic energy at will, can testify to the astounding displays of qi. Transmitting qi from your hands to another person's affected body is not a sleight-of-hand or one of those David Blaine's tricks.
It is real and is actually quite normal once you understand how it works. Do not be overconfident but be helpful to others who may need your help. But first, you must be an epitome of health yourself. You cannot give what you do not have. Such is the law and the reality.
That is why those who are able to heal with qi energy constantly practise and tune their physical beings. For it is given to those who have noble aims, the way of healing that seems to elude others. Have the right attitude, cultivate discipline and be at peace with your heart, mind and soul, and all will be open to you.

Why do some live very much longer than others?
ONE reason for longevity is genetics. That is something that you either have or you don't have. You can almost blame it on your ancestors. There are some people who actually come from "the right stock".
These genetically superior homo sapiens have thicker capillaries (they don't suffer heart attacks or strokes as easily as the others). These people are physically stronger and are naturally healthier than most people.
You can put it to karma or religion but that's the way life is. This is something you cannot control. On the other hand, there are other things that are well within your control.
And these are lifestyle, diet, weight, peace of mind and a determination to have a strong, healthy body, thus increasing your chances of achieving a longer life span.
It is actually not that difficult to live pass 85 years old. Live right, eat right and don't think you are right all the time and you will be okay. What I mean is that's a good start.
From my decades of wandering around on earth, I found out that those who have better chances of living long are those individuals who laugh a lot, don't worry unnecessarily, are naturally generous and kind, and most of all, spiritually inclined.
So are you still up to it? I mean do you really want to live long and well and at the same time, achieve everlasting peace of mind?
Some people are natural suicide cases. They like to live dangerously and they brag about it. I have known friends who are smokers who casually proclaim that they KNOW they stand a good chance of dying of lung cancer but "at least I know what I am dying of? Do you?"
How do you respond to such an individual under those set of circumstances? However, if it is your karma to lead a short life, do not despair. It could be because you have fulfilled all your purpose of walking among men. Take it from me that it is a good thing.
Normally, only the highly evolved souls do not spend much time on earth. They check in and then quickly they check out. But it is not something I would like to dwell on too much here.
If you look after your mental health, look after your body and take care of the "temple" that you call the body, then you should have a good chance to live longer than the normal life span of 72 years for men and 75 years for women.
If I may be so bold as to suggest that you also refrain from overindulging in habits of gossiping, bad-mouthing others, holding grudges, harbouring hostility, being vindictive, etc.
Those habits can shorten your life by quite a number of years. If you live longer than usual, after a while, people will begin to take an interest in you. In the event of such an eventuality, you can actually impart some valuable advice to your fellow human beings.
Learn to take one day at a time. Do not worry about tomorrow. Do not believe too much in the power of money. Believe only in love, because in the end, it is all there is.
Those who love strongly, love well and love forevermore, will transcend all kinds of borders and enter the kingdom of heaven with ease accompanied by great joy and celebration.

Sleep on your woes and wake up on your toes!
THEY say that sleep is the panacea for life's ills. It's true. When you are heavily laden by daily's woes and worries, one of the side-effects is the desire to take a rest and possibly go to sleep.
It is in sleep, you find the escape that your body and mind so sorely need. The mind never sleeps. It just glides in and out of that twilight zone of uncontrolled visions and images, translated at times into symbols and bizarre scenarios.
It is life's way of telling you that no matter how impossible may be your situation, it is as illusionary as the dream that you have just dreamt.
The veiled side of sleep is its healing effect. There are ways of bringing sense and control back to your physical existence if you know what to do. First, before you doze off, tell yourself confidently that you will find the solution to your existing problems in your sleep.
In other words, you give free rein to your subconscious to solve the problem or problems for you. Even if you don't get the answer immediately, at least you have given your tired, worried beaten body the respite it badly needs.
The mind is well connected to dimensions beyond man's comprehension. We think we know a lot and believe we can solve a lot of things but we merely scratch the surface when it comes to the power of the subconscious.
In the realm of sleep, all gates are open. There's no avenue we cannot reach. There's no barrier, we can't leap across. It is a world where the impossible becomes the possible, and if pursued with great determination, it will lead to reality.
Close your eyes, but don't close your mind. It is what some Zen masters have experienced and almost none has been able to explain to the satisfaction of the unknowing and the uninitiated.
There are some masters who tell us that when the body, mind and soul harmonise, everything becomes One. There's nothing you don't know. There's nothing you would want. There's nothing to fear and love prevails and pervades. It is that deliciously happy place called satori, kundalini and nirvana.
Those are mere words to describe a particular experience. Actually, there's no word equivalent to that kind of experience. But to step on to the threshold of such a zone is enough to put a smile on a person's face for the remaining years of his life on earth.
But first we must begin with sleep. Sleep is but a stepping stone to another dimension where your earthly woes cannot enter. It is a place where you leave the heavy baggage of daily worries behind. You check all these stones of frustration, grudges and dissatisfaction at the concierge of the Dream Kingdom.
If you have learnt a bit of qigong or at least part of its concept, it can help you to smoothen the rough edges of your daily existence. Make use of sleep to erase the worry lines on your face. Let sleep be the highway that will speed you towards the destination of joy and happiness.
Of course, you must have faith. Faith is the key that will jump-start the vehicle that will transport you to that happy resort called No Worries. Where you are going in your sleep, fear seldom enters. You become the key, you become the solution and you alone have all the answers.
So next time before you fall asleep, smile and know you are well on your way out of that troubled situation you are in right now and will emerge on the right side of No Worries.

Moving the Qi in your sleep
Have you ever experienced the awakening time about half an hour to 60 minutes before your eyes are wide open? If you have, let it be known that in those fleeting moments when you are skirting along the fringes of your own personal twilight zone, you can actually move your Qi to revitalise tired limbs and weary body.
I tried it this morning at about 6.30am. I knew it was a "short" time to 7.35am when my alarm would ring. So I "commanded" my Qi to circulate my entire human form.
It is when your body is at rest that there won't be other encumbrances like stretching your toes, moving your hips or grinding your teeth.
Almost everything is at your command, provided you know what to do. In an awakened world, passivity is also known as inactivity. In the world of transcendental meditation, being passive is actually being active.
The mind is most receptive when it is passive. Something to do with the delta brain waves.
Imagine an inexorable wave of pure energy sweeping across the tributaries of your human form. Every river of Qi is cutting across the legs, arms, hair, toes, fingers and internal organs. As the flow of Qi moves in and around your organs and limbs, "see" the energy seeping into the vital spots and strengthening them.
Remember, this is all at your command. Believe it, perform it and benefit directly from it. This is one of the biggest hidden secrets of the martial arts world. It is that the mind thinks, the body follows suit. There is no place for doubt. Faith is the answer.
Next time, just before you wake up in the morning, know that time has stood still and only in your mind's eye, do you see and unleash the forces that lie dormant in your human body until it is awakened to served you alone.

Positive Thinking - You Are What You Think
I KNOW it's quite difficult to think positive when you have a dollar in your wallet, a flat tyre in the middle of the night on a lonely stretch of highway, your child's sick and you are beside yourself with worry, or you are bypassed for promotion again despite the fact that you have worked yourself to the bone.
But taking into consideration all that have happened to you, all the more you should conjure some positive thoughts because money can always be earned and found; a flat tyre can be re-inflated or mended; a child's ailment can be treated; being promoted may bring longer hours in the office, etc.
So like we say out here in the Far East, good luck can also mean bad luck, depending on which way the horse runs. To cut a long parable short, one day a man found a tame horse loitering around in his orchard. Like all ordinary blokes, he thought "wow, what a lucky break. A horse for free."
So he led the horse to his barn, washed it, fed it and later put a saddle on its back. As he rode the horse across the field, a wild rabbit scurried across its path, startling it. The horse leapt and then bolted in a different direction. Our man hung on to the reins for his dear life. About a hundred yards later, the runaway horse keeled over because one of its legs sank into a ditch. The rider toppled over and broke both legs.
That's the moral of the story. What is considered as lucky for you, may in the end turned out to be your predicament.
So the wise man neither takes stock of the so-called good or imagined bad. Everything happens as it happens. It does not matter what it is. Everything "bad" can be seen in a totally good light. Many a life has been changed for the better because the person experiencing it sees only good things emanating from it.
We are all creatures of the earth. When our bodies have run its course, it will expired. That's when we die. In the meantime, we try and get the best results from a fragile life form.
Those who see only the best in themselves and others will transformed their imagined reality into actual reality for themselvs. If we do not hold fast to everything we consider our own, we will never be disappointed. Everything we see and touch are not ours to have and to hold.
Buddha is right. If we do not form attachment to impermanent objects or forms, there will be on unhappiness.
Everything, I mean everything, can be see in a positive light. The power of choice is ours. Nobody can make us see the bad sight if we do not want to see it so.
A lot of things have taken place in my life which I have not taken to heart. For example, about 20 years ago, I volunteered to work in another State. At first, there was some apprehension as to what I was getting myself into. My colleagues thought it was "the end" for me.
However, my years from the headquarters turned out to be the best working years of my life. Till today, I get nostalgic over those wonderful years when the office staff were so much smaller than the head office. My male colleagues became closer to me than my brother.
We were hundreds of miles away from the head office and we were delirious with joy because there was no boss to breathe down our necks. It was one of the greatest moments of my life. Everyday when I wake up, I look forward to going to office because it wasn't like work, it was more like a holiday camp.
Positive thinking can also be applied to qigong, tai chi or anyone of the martial arts that are being practised. Take for example, a man who excels in a particular martial art. He is constantly worrying about his family and other unimportant matters.
When this person who is harbouring all those worrying thoughts exercise, how much do you think he's going to gain from the automated physical exercises? My guess is very little benefit will he derive from the morning or evening exercise sessions.
That's because he worries too much. Worry is like dirt thrown into your wok as you cook. It is a substance that you don't need. On the other hand, positive thoughts are like the garnishings you add to an already marvellous dish.
The person who constantly entertains positive thoughts carries with him a self-generated battery. He does not get angry. His mind is always sharp and he's in touch with the universe.
There's nothing to lose from thinking positively. When you don't have anything else to lose, and you lose hope as well, you have truly lost everything. You must make positive thinking part of your personal armoury. It is the shield you need when the spears of criticism and bad talk come in your direction.
Positive thoughts strengthens the human resolve, brighten the darkened corners of your mind and rejuvenates a tired body after a long, hard day in the office. Smile if you must but never give up. Don't kill yourself with worry. It does nothing for you except bury yourself in the graveyard of personal distress.
Tell yourself every minute of everyday that you are "better than ever". That's my standard answer when people come up to me and ask "How are you today?" I shock them with my energetic reply. Most of the time, they laugh but at the back of their mind, I know they envy me because I see the beautiful flowers out there in the fields and smell the roses in someone else's garden.
Life is not meant to be treated with gloomy thoughts nor should it considered a slow walk down purgatory. Heaven is here, there's no other place. Remember that always with all the right reasons, and heaven will open its doors wide, just for you.

Eat right, Sleep tight
Some people may actually ask what has eating got to do with longevity. Well, if you consume items that are not suitable for your physical constitution, it will clog the fragile human system and thus, causing an unpleasant chain of events.
It has been proclaimed in tonnes of books that eating the right food will do wonders for you. Some of these, right at the top of my head are soya, raw garlic, fresh vegetables (preferably organic), lots of clear water, fresh fruits, and go easy on the spirits.
In fact, as you grow older, it may be advisable to consume less because you are no longer that young person you once were about 25 years ago. Basically, your body is no longer in such fine shape. It may take longer to process all that foreign matter that you chuck into your mouth and down the alimentary canal.
Drinking coffee is fine, if you do it in moderation. Same goes for wine and other alcoholic drinks. There is such a word as "excess".
Notice, those people who are into meditation and other transcendental stuff, that they avoid certain food and are constantly fasting. Fasting is one way of freeing the body from subjecting itself to unnecessary chores. When a human body has less to worry about, the mind carries a lighter burdern.
People in the East fast for long periods in order to partake in certain religious ceremonies. It goes without saying that a body that is not burdened with too much food will pave the way for the heart and mind to work in harmony.
Most martial arts masters and masters of yoga, tai chi and qigong don't eat too much. They do eat, just like most of us, except their dietary controls are more finely honed than ours.
If you do not subjected your body to too much culinary torture, it will somehow function at a better pace than normal. The idea is to channel the energy within the human system towards more beneficial objectives.
Therefore, be aware that qigong holds the key to many secrets of longevity. But the only secret that is not really a secret is fast and abstinence from activities that are not conducive for mental development.
We are all physical beings but fortunately for us, we are also spiritual entitites. Yes, the human body serves its purpose but the mind and soul reach places that we will never dream possible.
Qigong functions better in a human form that is not slowed down by the consumption of too much food. We all have to eat to live, but we should think twice if we prefer to live to eat.
If you are the type who desire to touch the veil of heaven and perhaps even catch a fleeting glimpse of eternity, you need to develop a human form that is suitable for such an adventure.
Remember the famous phrase, "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." Many of us are like that. The truth is all of us can add decades to our lives but we are simply unwilling to pay for the price for it.
One of the secrets of longevity is to achieve the perfect balance of body, mind and soul. It is not that difficult but are you willing to walk down that path. You can't, of course, want your cake and eat it as well. In other words, you want to party hard, long late nights, reckless living and excesses in all forms.
Don't forget we are talking of the human body. As with anything that is a living organism, it has its limits.
The body is capable of achieving almost unimaginable feats but it can also be abused, leading to a short life span. If you want to live out your entire natural life, then you must be committed to abiding by certain principles.
In two simples sentences, it means eating the good stuff and having regular good nights' sleep. It sound so simple that people tend to laugh at the simplicity of it. If you don't worry too much, it will add years to your life. Worry keeps the body from being pristine.
Take time to smell the roses, like they say. Qigong is one exercise I know that can trigger a chain of positive effects in a well tuned body. Our bodies are basically designed to be Ferraris but we abused this biological vehicle and more oftern than not, turn it into a pick-up truck. Consequently, it gets knocked about so often that in the end, it slows down, spurts and stutters and develops endless engine problems along the journey.
Eat right, sleep tight is about it. Get that right the first time, every time and you will be all right for about 90 to 100 years on earth.

Take it easy, you are trying too hard
ONE common problem that plagues most novice qigong practitioners is that they try too hard. It is not exactly the pre-trials for the Beijing Olympics 2008, you know.
Qigong is one of those arts that is powered by an ease of flow. It tends to obey the gentle tug of a caressing palm than a forced extension of a stiffened arm.
The Chinese masters, centuries ago, observed creatures of the wild carefully. The creatures in obeying their own instincts never for once did what came naturally. And so it is too for us humans.
Qigong probably has part of its origins traceable to crane, praying mantis or cat. When you are waking up in the morning, the tendency is to stretch your limbs to give the muscles that jumpstart it badly needs.
Qigong is practised along those lines. You do not force what should be done in full accordance with nature. Gently does it, as they say.
Next time, you see a magpie perched on a branch outside your house, take a good, long look at it. You may see that it moves instinctively. The energy inbuilt comes from within. It has always been there. It should not be forced.
There have been occasions early in the morning outside my house when one or sometimes two magpies serenade me while I am going through my qigong motions. Their singing brings great joy to my mornings. It helps me to harness the much talked about qi that answers to the call of nature as easily as it obeys the dictates of the heart and mind.
One of the greatest gurus of spiritual guidance is Sai Baba who resides in India. It is he who said "When you desist, God exists." And so it is written in the Bible, "Be Still, and Know that I am God."
From those simple phrases resides the wisdom of the ages. Qigong is but one of the many gateways to self-fulfilment in terms of health, peace of mind and almost inexhaustible energy. Therefore, be gentle with yourself, and all will come unto you.

Let the music guide your Qi
YOU know how it is in the morning or evening, or maybe even way pass midnight, it is quiet and it's just you and the silence, and then there is your qigong routine.
I have found on certain mornings, a strong urge to break the silence. It would seem the soul searches for the "rite of passage", if I may use that phrase. So there have been some early dawns when I put on a CD to help me ease my way into the qigong path.
Yesterday for example, the Celtic refrains of the Secret Garden filled the living room where I was going through the qigong exercises. I was pleasantly surprised that the music filled me with a whole sense of renewal.
It is true that for time immemorial, man has loved and used music to enrich his life. It is the one language that needs no words. Music then is like a magic carpet that takes a person from one plane to another in an instance.
Yesterday morning was one of those occasions for me. Suddenly, time took a backseat and I found myself being transported to a zone where qigong was no longer an exercise. It became the "way".
I have always loved music but not the kind my daughter prefers. She thinks the world of James Blunt and John Legend. I come from a different world, a generation far removed from the young lady.
Sometimes, I listen with great delight the mystical and mysterious tunes from the pipes of the Incas. This is a small, travelling group of musicians from South America who have on occasion visited Malaysia and entertained those of us lucky enough to encounter them.
The music of the Incas radiates and penetrates. It becalms a troubled mind, emits a musical force that defies explanation. I simply love it. When I put it on before the qigong session, it becomes a vehicle for a body and mind transcending experience.
Music has many purposes. In qigong, it slips seamlessly into the ambience of the surroundings and takes hold of all life-forms presents and become one with it. Music is the carpet that floats and flutters in the untapped regions of our minds.
If only more of us invites it into our busy and harried lives.

Arthritis in the Eagle's Shadow
INDIVIDUALS of the older generation do suffer from arthritis of the hands now and then. It is not a very pleasant sensation to have pins and needles in both hands on any occasion.
Suddenly you feel helpless as the painful feelings run through all the digits of both hands. You can't help but rub them together, or you might start tugging at each finger to soothe away the hurt.
Arthritis of the fingers and hands is actually quite common. The causes are many and varied but that is not our concern here. What we are concerned about here is how to get rid of them until such time when the situation ceases to exist.
Is that ever possible, an arthritis suffer would ask. Yes, it is very possible. And here's how you do it. Find yourself a wood chair which has a nice firm back.
Stretch out your arms horizontal on both sides of your body. Clench your fingers like how you would imagine an eagle clench its claws. That means the fingers are crooked and curved into a claw-shaped fist.
Tense both hands when they are in that state. Slowly, open each finger with great deliberation. First, the forefinger, then the middle finger. This is followed by the ring finger and finally the last finger.
While you are opening your fingers, one by one, feel the tension escaping from each finger that is finally straightened. As each finger stretches, imagine the digits of each finger stretching to its maximum length, as if all the rustiness of the finger is vanishing.
After you have "un-claw" both hands, return to their original position. That means the fingers of both right and left hands become "claws" again. Repeat the exercise, until you feel you have worked out all the 10 fingers.
There should be at least three repetitions. Do this exercise as often as possible. The body has a way of listening to the body. If done correctly and with great deliberation, your arthritis should be eased considerably or disppeared altogether.
Your hands are sometimes the most neglected part of your anatomy. That's because you use them so often that you have taken them for granted since the day you were born. The advantage of having a perfectly healthy pair of hands is often overlooked by individuals.
Pamper your hands. Keep them strong and healthy and you will find that good, strong hands will serve you well till the day you have to leave this beautiful planet.
In the meantime, exercise those digits, fingers and hands in general. You will almost never appreciate them so much until the day comes when you have to give up your earthly form.

Cruising the zone - the Mind Never Sleeps
A LOT of people have the impression that when we sleep, all activities cease. Long ago, scientists have discovered that electrical activity in our brain never cease. It moves and glides on a different wave band.
In the higher echelons of wu shu and qigong, a master can engage in activities while his body is at rest. Even though, his eyes are closed, his breathing shallow and his heart beats slow, his mind wanders.
A man who knows qigong and seeks solutions to problems that he wishes to solve can enter the vault of solutions that is only accessible when the body is at rest. It is not a complicated process but you need to know where the portals are located.
The mind can repair an ailing body while it is in the sleep mode. At complete rest, the qi can move smoothly and swiftly. It takes practice and a faith that is the exclusive right of one who has touched the veils of an energy source that is beyond ordinary mortals.
Many may find this an impossible belief or a ridiculous concept but those who have partook of such activity usually do not feel the need to prove that it exists. It works when it works.
It is not a miracle to them. It is merely exercising a function that lies dormant in all of us until we are mentally and spiritually ready to awaken such functions. The laws of physics do not govern this realm.
In this domain devoid of space and time, nothing is impossible. Nothing is extraordinary. Every is normal and functional. And thus, the subject of longevity is no longer an issue, it becomes a right.
But first, the person who wants to cruise along this celestial highway must learn the ways of preparing his body and mind for such a journey. Remember - the mind never sleeps. It merely goes on another journey, though not on the earthly plane.
It is the ultimate world of wonders.

The Way of the Qigong Warrior
Discipline and a sense of commitment are two essential prerequisites to accomplishing anything. With qigong, tai chi, kung fu, wu shu, taekwondo or even kalari payat, your sense of commitment will encounter obstacles somewhere along the journey.
Like all lifeforms of biodegradable material, we can get discouraged, lose enthusiasm and lack the vital discipline that guarantee success in most personal ventures.
There have been times in my life when the urge to exercise and stay fit was not there. Such things do happen, you know. You get lazy and just feel like sleeping 10 more minutes. The mind is willing but the flesh is weak, if you know what I mean.
So without beating around the bush any further, what I am driving at is that if you want to achieve some success in the practice of qigong or any of the martial arts which I have mentioned earlier, you MUST have this sense of commitment.
Be disciplined. There's no way to get around it. If you are feeling sleepy, shock your system by getting out of your stupor by moving your hands and hips and getting into the swing of things.
Find the best times to "tune up" your body. After a while, your body will obey your mind. But first, set your mind straight. Condition your mind, then your body will re-condition itself.
You simply must do this, otherwise you will just become fat and lazy. The months will roll by, the years will slip pass and next thing you know, you will be a roly-poly - the object of ridicule and the subject of unsavoury remarks.
After a while, you will feel sorry for yourself. Your family will treat you like a pathetic lump of lard and may even say a couple of prayers for you. The worst thing that can happen to you is that you will lose all respect for yourself and you will literally give up on yourself. Now you don't want that, do you?
That's why a thousand years ago, some very wise man in China said: "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." And so it begins......with you.

Healing Hands
Who among us has not fallen ill at one time or another. It could be that we have been working relentlessly and have forgotten to slow down and take a breather.
Nature has a way of reminding us that we are not robots but lifeforms consisting of bones, flesh and blood. Hence, if the going gets too tough and if we are just being silly by not resting, our bodies can protest by succumbing to bacteria or just plain old fatigue.
Whenever, something goes amiss with our human form, qigong is that special antidote to right all the physical wrongs.
You who may have learned some qigong steps must apply all the principles you have learnt. That is why such an art form has come to your knowledge. However, in reality many of us tend to forget in the daily rush of activities.
There have been instances in my life when I have subjected myself unnecessarily to stresses or what I perceived to be stressful situations. Anyway, the outcome was the feeling of being "a bit under the weather". Often, when I find myself in such a state I will remind myself to recharge my body and mind.
The only way to achieve this state of equilibrium is to engage in a series of qigong exercises. Although qigong is not meant to be an instant cure, it helps "oil the machinery" so that other processes can be kickstarted to attain internal harmony. The end result is an abnormal recovery.
It has happened to me once too often to be passed off as a fluke. Qigong is harnessing energy from without and within and move it willingfully through the human form so that all the "rust" and "impurities" that clog the meridians will be washed away.
Partaking in a qigong "ritual" instills peace of mind and a glow to the body. It brings an inevitable state of relaxation, a condition that is unfriendly to the existence of bacteria and virus. Thus, you recover fast. Maybe you won't leap over a 10-storey building or run faster than the bullet train, but you will certainly surprise your family doctor.
There is a growing number of doctors who now begin to believe that Eastern health exercises like tai chi and qigong are more than that that meets the eye.
If you happen to stumble onto the path of ill health, pick yourself up with a dose of qigong. That is what I call "hit the ground running".

Find your power in the dark
If you are like many others who get easily distracted during exercises, don't be alarmed, it is actually quite common.
There is one way to find your way if you should ever "get lost in all those thoughts" or minor distractions.
Choose a time towards the evening, maybe even outside in your lawn at night, to go through that set of tai chi or giqong movements which you have learnt. If you are at home, in a room or even in the hall, switch off all the lights.
It will be just you and the darkness. Then, slowly go through the motions. Feel the emptiness. Revel in it. Let your mind be still and "feel" the qi enveloping you on the outside and circulating with its inexorable force in the inside.
As usual, "ride the wind". Let darkness be your friend. Do not fear it. In such an environment, the qi shall be your beacon. Let it circulate in and around you. Learn to let go. Be happy. Do not allow thoughts of office or anything else occupy your mind.
If at all possible, Be Still. Move the qi. Move your body, your hands, your legs and float on the highway of no light. The darkness will help you to calm your mind. Qi functions best in circumstances of least resistance.
Darkness is only the absence of light. Where you are "travelling", you need no light, so let darkness help you feel the invisible force that you harness from the cosmos that forms everything around you.
Let it flow through you like radiation. Let it energise your entire being. Believe it. Thought is afterall energy. I will never tire of telling everybody this. "See" the energy in your mind. Move it from your imagination to your body and direct it to wherever you want it to go.
You are the source. Qi is the river. Ride the waves. Feel it in your entire being, then you will be free.

Lowering your blood pressure Part 2
The second technique in deflating your blood pressure bubble is to find a stool that is about the height of your knees.
Sit on it and maintain a straight-back posture. Extend both legs in front of you, then slowly lift your right leg in an erect manner. Slowly rotate your foot clockwise three times, and then anti-clockwise three times.
Now, the left foot. Repeat the same process. Rotate foot three times clockwise and then anti-clockwise three times.
Don't be in a hurry. Don't be anxious. Everything about qigong must be done in a gentle manner. You can do this as many times as you want until you feel that you have achieved a certain level of relaxation.
This exercise "drains" the pressure from the upper part of the body and provides an escape valve for the pressure built up through stress or tension, whether at home or in the office.
You can also do this while sitting at your workplace in the office, with both your feet under the table. Nobody is going to know that you are doing this exercise with your feet (if you don't raise your feet higher than the table!).
I have tried this technique on numerous occasions. Again, I tell you it works. Qigong is for believers and practitioners. You practise it with an unshakeable faith and it will work the way you want it to.
Here's a toast to your good health!
Lowering your blood pressure Part 1
If you are 40, you may be one of those who are already experiencing high blood pressure but don't realise it. There are many people who have high BP. It is usually linked to the stresses of daily living or you are just one of those who has high BP because everyone else in your family has it.
There are several ways to control your moderate-to-high BP. One is of course diet. Another is to eat a clove or two of raw garlic at every meal. The third method is meditation. Fourth is controlled deep-breathing. These are some of the ways.
In qigong, there are several techniques. They have worked for others. You can try them and see if they work for you as well.
The first technique - sit on a chair with a hard back. Keep your body erect. Don't slouch, at the same time, don't be tense. Put your hands on your thighs, with palms facing upwards.
Then, using the thumbs of both hands, press the tip of the thumb on the middle digit (the fleshy part) of both middle fingers. Do it rhymthmically. Don't be in a hurry.
You close your eyes while you are doing the exercise. This is based on the principle of acupressure. It helps to "pump" the pressure point that affects the tension in the body. Done correctly and in a relaxed manner, it can lower your blood pressure.
Based on my own experience, I believe this technique helps. So next time, if you are in a state of tension or stress and want a quick solution to de-stressing yourself, try this technique.
If you achieve a positive result, you can share your happiness with us all. Cheers.

Hold That Vision
EVER get tired working out? Of course, you do, like the rest of us mortals. How about walking up and down a hill? Sure, why not, we are all creatures of biodegradable materials.
A couple of months ago, I was trekking up and down a forest recreation area in Melbourne, Australia. It was one of Australia's finest and it is called Otway national park.
It was the beginning of spring and the temperature hovered around the low 60s. I love climate like that. We were in a group of eight. The walk took us about 40 minutes one way and then up a shaky metalled watch tower about 45 metres up at 90 degree angle.
On the way back, I was huffing and puffing, and I thought I was one of the fittest among the group. Actually, I wanted to soak in all the sights and sounds of the forest. I love nature but the others were in a hurry to get back. Wet blankets, I thought.
So like all macho guys, I tried to pick up pace and catch up the the runaway pack. Among them was this overweight, chain-smoking woman in her 30s. One look at her, and anyone would have thought she will tire out after 100 metres of walking on a level playing field.
Not this one. She was walking, walking and walking. I was at little surprised at first and then when I couldn't catch up with her, I was totally shocked. I don't know whether I was shocked that I was so "unfit" or shocked that she beat me to the finishing line.
Since she was an old chum of mine, I asked her where did all that stamina come from. In a one-word reply, she said: "Yoga". "Focus on something and then just proceed without a second thought," was her second reply.
For some time now, I realise that when you are focusing on something in a distance while you are out for a walk, regardless of the incline, you tend not to get tired. But I had forgotten all about this until this woman jolted my memory.
Qigong walking is something like that. Next time, when you are out for a long walk on a hill or a big recreation park, try this. Focus on something in the far distance, be totally absorbed in it, hold that vision in your mind, and just walk towards it.
The mind then takes out and your legs will function without you worrying about how tired your thigh muscles will become. I have tried this technique on several occasions, and I have found out that when your focus on something in the distance while you exercise, in this case, walking, you won't feel tired, or not that tired.
It is one of those neat tricks that has its foundation built centuries ago in China. Peasants and farmers had to walk long distances to get to their destinations and focusing on the mountain top miles away helped them to cover the long distance with the minimal amount of effort.
Qigong is also about using your mind to control your body. Once you know all the right buttons to push, you will be on your way, and it won't cost your much in terms of energy.
Qigong walking is one of the most delightful exercises ever devised for outdoors. It energises your human form, revitalises your mind, and gladdens the heart. By the time, you have covered the entire circuit, you will feel recharged like a powerful dynamo. All it takes is practice.
Breathe Like A Baby
MANY people think the correct way of breathing is by expanding the lungs. That means when they inhale, they pull in their tummy and expand their chest.
That is the wrong way. The correct way is to expand your stomach and let your diapraghm drop. That would give your lungs that extra space to take in more air.
Watch how a baby breathes especially when he is lying on his back. The stomach rises like the crest of the ocean. The way a baby breathes is the natural way, and that's the best way.
In Chinese qigong, breathing is an art. Normal people think it is the easiest thing to do in the world, and for ages they have been doing it the wrong way.
Deep breathing when done right reaps enormous benefits. It helps your body to relax, brings down the blood pressure and steadies the nerves.
The next time when you are anxious or nervous, try this. First, take a deep breath by distending your tummy. The intake of breath must be slow and deep. When you have reached full capacity, hold your breath for two or three seconds and then let it out slowly in a steady stream.
As you exhale, feel as if all the nervousness is leaving your body as well. Be like a balloon as it deflates. Repeat the movements several times. Don't be in a hurry.
The steps are simple: Inhale slowly and deeply. Hold it. Exhale slowly and thoroughly. If you feel the need to do it more than three times, go ahead. This procedure is very good for those who want to fall asleep fast. I have done it many times, in fact, almost every night when my head hits the pillow. Nine out of 10 times, I am out like a light.
A number of qigong schools do not teach this aspect of breathing but if you incorporate it in your exercises, you can build stamina, lower your blood pressure and pump more oxygen into your body and brain.
When you take in air, you inadvertently absorb oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. When you fill your body with oxygen, your blood will, as a matter of course, carry the oxygen to your brain. When the brain receives a large dose of oxygen, it automatically "awakens".
That is why a tired person is always yawning. That is the body's way of taking in oxygen, so that you will stay alert and not fall asleep on the table or chair.
Breath control will hasten recovery process when the body is affected by germs, bacteria or virus. The human body has a built-in capacity for self-healing. When you "pull" the oxygen switch, it triggers a chain of events in the body. One of the processes is to kickstart the body's machinery to recover when it has a "downtime".
Qigong is not all about moving your hands, legs and head. It also involves the flow of air throughout your system. Yes, you do "imagine" the flow of qi along the numerous meridian lines throughout the entire body.
Breathing helps to clean the human system of the "stale air" that keeps circulating in an out-of-shape body. A steady flow of Air in the body is like pouring water through a hose in your porch. It washes away impurities like water flushing away dirt on the floor.
You can develop the art of deep breathing to such an extent where it becomes second nature to you. Deep breathing is associated with the rhythm of life. When you deep breath as a matter of natural course, it will transform your life. Good life will no longer a matter of chance. It becomes part of you.
Qigong is like a balancing act. When you are walking the high-wire of life, the aim is always to achieve perfect balance. Once you are perfectly balanced, your yin and yang will be in harmony. You may at times achieve a fleeting perfect balance.
The idea is to sustain total harmony. Qigong is one of the ways towards that goal. Once you have it, hold on to it and the rest of your life is beautiful sailing on the sea of life.

Purge the Impurities
What is good health? My definition is peace of mind, a good appetite, an ability to sleep soundly, no illness, alert all the time and an unstoppable zest for life.
Physical exercise is welcome, of course. Dynamic movements make a human body "well oiled". That means the joints are flexible, stretchable and elastic without being stiff.
Yoga can do wonders for a tired body, young or old. Tai chi can breathe fresh energy into an old life form (that's you). Other forms of martial arts can help you build muscles, stamina and perhaps even turn you into a killing machine.
Qigong is on the gentler side of life. It helps you "see" our inner self. It is seemingly nothing on the outside and everything on the inside and more.
A lot of people think sickness is the result of bacteria, virus and germs of no particular order. They are right, up to a point. Sometimes, illness is brought on by stress, worry, and an aversion to the office.
Some people unknowingly make themselves sick. How, you may ask. Sickness begins with incessant and unreasonable hostility, selfishness and an inability to forgive others.
Anger, as ancient Chinese have known, affects the liver, the heart and the stomach. Today, this revelation is beginning to surface in all its malignancy by modern medical researchers.
When we keep a grudge, or have a score to settle, or even entertaining hostile thoughts, we are doing ourselves a great harm. All these negative feels produce effects that dull the mind, affect the heart and upset the alimentary canal system in our bodies.
When one partakes in qigong exercises, one of the first steps should be to purge the mind of all these negative developments. They body recognise thoughts that dwell on the dark side. Negative thoughts punish the body. Some of the internal organs shun the negative states. If they are unable to do so, the reactions are normally gastric ulcer, heart condition and a slight case of schizophrenia.
Qigong is best practised in a "sterile" environment. For the unknowing, it means your mind and heart be free of hostility, grudges, petty jealousies and little scheming ideas and an inability to come to terms with reality.
When the heart is free of encumbrances, and the mind devoid of all that adds bumps in its playing field, there's little that qigong can do for you. You need to realise that qigong cannot be done in isolation. It needs "pure air", just as a baby needs clean diapers.
Any life form that operates in ideal conditions, functions well. That includes the human body. Thus, in the realm that is cleansed of all "impurities" that unsettle the body and mind, the qi faces no impediments. The flow through all the meridian points will be unimpeded. The current will be strong and steady. This will result in a healthy body, clear mind and pure heart. Together they form the axis of knowledge.
When it all comes together, you will feel a slight touch of Zen.

Resist Nothing
IT IS said that when you resist something, it exerts even a greater pressure. This is especially true when it comes to temptation.
Taken to to fullest extent, the axiom of "resist nothing" also applies to the art of qigong. When you do not hold back anything, especially when the flow of qi is strong, the river of energy finds its natural course.
Qigong involves a certain amount of meditation. In the course of your mental quest, you are inclined to "over-think", thereby ruining a chain of events that would be beneficial for a "turbo-charged" body.
Most of the novices who practise qigong tend to overdo it. They think it is some kind of a contest between their physical capability and mental endurance.
Qigong is none of that. It is all about activating a sluggish flow of qi that has led to a breakdown in your energy system. A human body that has poor qi flow will be apt to succumb to illnesses.
The quickest way to kickstart a steady flow of qi is to act "naturally", like a willow tree flowing with the wind and its branches gravitating towards the water level in the river.
Qigong today is basically the same as it was 500 years ago. The only exception is 500 years old, practitioners of qigong accepted the forms of qigong as a natural phenomenon. Modern practitioners are too "questioning". We are almost disbelievers in an art that has benefited thousands of generations of people who incorporated good health and longevity into their daily lives.
In the ancient days, those who learn and practise qigong were inadvertently wu shu students as well. Qigong was like chapter two of the wu shu schedule of activities. In those times, you practise qigong because you know it does wonders for your body, mind and soul.
It comes with the territory, so to speak. If I may be so bold as to say that modern folk are into the "instant reward" system. When we do something, we expect the rewards to be immediate and hopefully instanteous. Part of the secret of generating good qi is to resist nothing.
By resisting nothing, it means wilfully allowing your body and mind to "let go". Qigong like the brain's delta waves flows strong in the zone of passitvity. It is not easy to remain actively passive.
Do not expect anything. Hold no pre-conceived notions. Just move for the sheer joy of knowing you are partaking in a ritual that will actually jumpstart your magic carpet to the domain of the impossible and enter into the mansion of the unbelievable.
How strong is thy faith? How well do you know the qi in your own body? These are questions that have often been asked and seldom been answered to the satisfaction of many.
To put it plainly, your body knows every little but the soul that collects your bolts of thoughts, much like electrical impulses that create the reality that is us. Qigong is the mental exertions of pushing the qi throughout the individual's physical system.
If you have a well "irrigated" system, your body will remain well energised, and you will almost never fall sick. To achieve this level of fitness, you need to spend at least 20 to 30 minutes daily doing your "set of moves" that the ancients call qigong.
The thing is qigong comes in many forms. They are all tributaries leading to the same big river and finally end up in the ocean of power called The White Source. When you have sail upon these waters of life, you will never again belittle all that which makes up earth because finally you would have realised that everythign is interconnected.
Qigong begins with a single hand movement, and then it goes on and so forth. Begin.

The Shortcut to Excellent Health
ABOUT seven years ago, I was hospitalised with a bleeding ulcer. The good doctor happily admitted me into a ward for treatment and observation. Prior to the admission, I was bleeding internally for four straight days.
Strangely though, I didn't experience any drop in vitality, nor was I tired. Anyway, I think the doctor did a blood count and found that I had lost some significant amount of blood without realising it.
Again, I wasn't behaving like someone who had just dropped two or three pints of blood. In other words, I should be feeling sleepy, fatigued or just plain drowsy. The doctor asked me if I wanted blood transfusion. I said no and gladly returned to bed and rest.
The few times the doctor examined me, he asked: "Do you feel any pain?" When I replied in the negative, he shook his head and said: "You must be one of those who belong to the painless sufferers group."
Frankly, I have not heard of such a group and I was puzzled. However, I did know that I had been practising gigong on my own for some time then. After a few more stringent tests, I was told I had the virus Helicopter Pilori in my system, and that little critter of a virus was responsible for my bleeding ulcer.
I do not smoke, hardly drink coffee and not inclined to worry too much. So all that worked in my favour. After 48 hours, I was out of hospital and resting at home.
After that little unpleasant stay in hospital, I came to the conclusion that even though I had a bleeding ulcer I didn't feel any sensation of unpleasantness and pain because my qigong had played a major part in my "strange" condition.
So I continued to do qigong everyday. In fact, I took steps to learn a few more qigong moves. One of my office colleagues and a few others expressed interest in learning a particular form of qigong that seemed to be quite popular in one part of the city.
We engaged an instructor to come to our office building rooftop everyday at a certain hour to teach us. It was a crash-course of five straight days and the fee was 100 ringgit (roughly US$25).
When the trainer turned up, we were surprised it was a woman in her 50s. Apparently, her husband who was the real instructor was busy and had sent his wife who was also an instructress in her own right.
She imparted some valuable rather quickly. She told us: "My wish is for you to continue to do qigong long after the course is over because you will be throwing away good money and wasting my time if you do not follow my instructions."
Obviously, she was quite upset with students who were caught up in the moment while doing the exercises and then quickly forgetting them when the session is over. The five days of instruction came and went.
There were about eight of us. That was about three years ago. Today, I believe I am one of two who continue to practise what we had been taught. I do the qigong exercises everyday for about 20 to 45 minutes. It is just a simple set of exercises and does not require Shaolin Temple type of discipline. All it needed was a mental commitment and a self-discipline.
All in all, I have been practising qigong consistently for a better part of eight years. My health has improved by leaps and bounds. My visits to the company medical clinic have narrowed down to zero.
The few times when I catch a cold, the recovery period is 24 hours with minor effects. Sometimes when I get caught in a heavy downpour, my hair and clothes are wet and I entered the airconditioned office and not changed my clothes. So they dry under the aircon.
The usual effect on me - nothing. I don't get a cold. I don't feel under the weather and frankly, the rain has no effect on my entire physical constitution. So practising is believing as I have been preaching to all those who want to listen to me.
I have read a number of books on qigong and the fundamentals are all there, except in my cases, the movements are different. The principles of qigong are basically the same. If a qigong practitioner can achieve partial success in harmonising his heart, mind and soul, his body becomes a crucible of smooth, flowing energy. It is what the Chinese have been calling "qi" or "chi" for thousands of years.
In the old days, about 2,000 years ago, qualified doctors were few and far between. So if you happened to be a poor peasant in the heart of nowhere in outback China and if you fall sick, then may God help you. So some kung fu practitioners came up with the formula of building a body that is impervious to ailments and other bodily diseases.
The art of qigong has been going on for hundreds of years. Some have been honed to a fine degree, so much so that the really good qigong masters can move their own bio-kinetic energy to another person and cure him of diseases.
This qigong energy transfer still happens today but the masters do not like to talk about it or want publicity. Too much foreknowledge of this kind of healing only invites too many requests which would eventually be impossible to fulfil.
However, the person who subscribe by the philosophy and the art of qigong lives to see miracles taking place within his own body and in his life. His mind becomes sharper. Occasionally he can sense the thoughts of another party and the events that may take place.
These are not hocus-pocus stuff but can actually take place in the realm of qigong. No qigong master likes to talk about his uncanny abilities because some people will start calling him a crackpot or may suspect him of smoking some strange weed.
Personally, I have walked down the qigong road for sometime now and the results are amazing. It is not something I feel the need to brag about but it would be good that others know that the art of self-healing is within their reach.
Doctor's bills can sometimes be quite daunting. So if you want to take the first step towards the road to longevity, pick up a simple book on qigong and start reading. Then when you are ready, find a good qigong teacher and start learning practising. You have nothing to lose but only your illness.
As time goes by, I shall provide more insights into this astounding ancient art that came from the Middle Kingdom that is now called China.
